FTAO Mr John Taylor, Chairman, ATG Gloves Pvt Ltd

Dear Mr Taylor,

I am writing to you as you are a European citizen who is an investor in the ATG Group of companies in Sri Lanka and Chair of the Board of Directors. I wish to express my concern at the ongoing attacks on the rights of members of the Free Trade Zone and General Services Employees’ Union (FTZ&GSEU), the recognised trade union at the company ATG Ceylon Pvt. Ltd.

ATG Ceylon has refused to meet with union representatives of FTZ&GSEU for negotiations about their basic terms and conditions of work, and that there are currently two cases being taken to arbitration against the company.

I wish to express my great concern at the use of intimidation of employees, pressuring them to resign from the union. Your company has also employed other anti-union practises such as refusing duty leave for branch officers to hold committee meetings within the company premises as well as several cases of suspensions, illegal transfers and dismissals of union leaders. This has been reinforced by the fact that five union activists were summarily dismissed on 11 January 2019.

I have also been made aware of violations of the Sri Lankan Board of Investment’s required “Labour Standards & Employment Relations” by your company. Indeed, we are aware that you have set up your own disciplinary committee that has acted contrary to agreed protocol. We understand that ATG Ceylon Pvt. Ltd has refused to calculate, and pay workers as required by the Tyre & Rubber Manufacturing Wages Board, resulting in workers losing overtime payments.

I demand that you convene a meeting between the management of ATG Ceylon and the representatives of FTZ&GSEU with immediate effect with a view to reinstating the trade union members whose employment was unlawfully terminated.

 Kind regards,
